Cyclic Sighing Safety: Dizziness, Discomfort & When to Stop

Breathwork Studios · 6 min read · General wellness & educational content only

Cyclic sighing is generally well tolerated, but a few sensations are common enough — and a few signs are worth stopping for. Here's how to tell the difference.

Why Lightheadedness Happens

The most common cause is a first inhale that's too forceful, or moving through rounds faster than is comfortable. Both can shift how much carbon dioxide is in your bloodstream faster than your body is used to.

To Ease Into It

Stop immediately if you feel faint, experience chest pain, or feel real distress. Breathe naturally and rest. If the sensation persists, speak with your healthcare provider before continuing.

Who Should Check With a Doctor First

Cyclic sighing is a general wellness practice, not a medical treatment. If you're pregnant, under 18, or have a diagnosed condition — including cardiovascular, respiratory, or anxiety-related conditions — consult your healthcare provider before starting.

What's Normal vs. What's Not

Usually normal: a mild, brief lightheaded feeling in the first few sessions, especially with a longer pattern like Rest. This typically fades as you become more familiar with the pacing.

Not normal — stop and reassess: chest pain, real dizziness that doesn't pass quickly, shortness of breath that feels wrong, or any sensation that concerns you.

If discomfort continues across multiple sessions, it's worth trying a shorter pattern, fewer rounds, or checking in with a healthcare provider rather than pushing through.
